OFFERS RADIOFREQUENCY ABLATION TO HELP REDUCE CHRONIC PAIN
At Three Rivers Health Pain Management Center, we create a plan of care to treat your chronic pain. One part of your treatment plan may include minor procedures that help reduce your pain. A Radiofrequency Ablation is one common procedure you may hear about from our pain management provider(s).
What is a RFA?
A Radiofrequency Ablation (or RFA) is a minor procedure that is performed to provide lasting relief from chronic pain.
A RFA is a spinal procedure that is best performed under a live x-ray. With the x-ray guidance, a small specialized needle is placed next to the nerves that carry the pain signals. A small amount of electrical current travels through the needle to make radiofrequency waves that heat up a small part of nerve tissue. This prevents the nerve from sending pain signals to your brain, which gives you pain relief.
What Conditions Are Treated with a RFA?
RFA’s are commonly used to provide relief to patients who suffer from chronic pain (lasting for 90 days or more) in the following areas:
- Lower Back
- Arthritic Joints
How Long Does Pain Relief Last from a Radiofrequency Ablation?
Nearly 90% of patients who have RFAs through our balanced pain management model have pain relief after the procedure. The amount of relief may vary based on the cause and location of the pain, but generally it lasts from 6-12 months and for some patients, relief lasts for years.
Is Radiofrequency Ablation Safe?
These procedures are a safe way of treating chronic pain. We encourage you to talk with your pain management provider if you are concerned about any specific risk to you or your condition.
